Set up Wireless Flash with optical wireless communications

      1. Attach the external flash you will be using wirelessly to the flash accessory shoe on the camera.
      2. Turn on the camera.
      3. Set the camera to one of the following modes:
        • Program (P)
        • Aperture Priority (A)
        • Shutter Priority (S)
        • Manual (M)
      4. Turn on the external flash.
      5. Set the camera to the wireless flash mode. For details on operation method, refer to the instructions manual of your camera.
NOTE: If the camera’s built-in flash is compatible with the optical wireless mode, depending on the model, the following conditions result when you set the flash mode of the camera to wireless (WL).
        • The camera's flash switches from being a light source to a controller.
        • The light output of the camera's flash is reduced to the point that it doesn't affect the exposure.
        • The external flash is set to wireless mode automatically and WL displays in the flash data panel.
      6. Set up the remote flash:
If the camera’s built-in flash is compatible with the optical wireless mode, set the external flash to the remote mode. If the camera’s built-in flash is not compatible with the optical wireless mode, or the flash is not built in to the camera, prepare two or more flashes and set the off-camera flash to the remote mode.
      7. Remove the external flash from the camera.
        • To add an external flash, manually match each additional flash to the configuration of the first flash.
        • Set each additional flash in remote (RMT) mode.
        • Additional flashes need to be set to use the same channel, like CH1, CH2, CH3, or CH4.
      8. Set up the control flash:
        • For an A-mount α (Alpha) camera with a built-in flash
          Raise the built-in flash.
Image indicating the location of the built-in flash (A) and remote flash (B)
          1. Built-in flash (CTRL)
          2. Remote flash (RMT)

        • For other compatible cameras
        1. Set up the control flash
        2. Attach an external flash to the flash accessory shoe.
Image indicating control flash (A) and remote flash (B)
          1. Control flash (CTRL)
          2. Remote flash (RMT)

      9. Set the appropriate exposure settings on the camera.
      10. Take a picture.

      NOTES:

      • The flash on the camera triggers the external flash when the picture is taken.
      • ADI metering is canceled and the P-TTL flash metering is used automatically in wireless flash mode.
      • If you need to mount the flash, use the 1/4" tripod mount of the supplied mini-stand. Don't use an ADP-MAA shoe adapter which may prevent the flash from firing wirelessly.
