What is a Tile in Windows 8?

 Tiles or Live Tiles are squares or rectangles displayed as a grid-like pattern on the Start screen. It represents Windows 8 apps, Desktop applications, Web Pages, Explorer folder locations and other items available in Windows Store. The tile can display relevant information such as the number of unread messages for an e-mail application, the current temperature on a weather application, or an appointment from the calendar application.
