Sony is offering a system software update for Digital 4K Video Camera Recorder FDR-AX53.

Improvements:
Improve image stability during pan/tilt operation when using with a tripod.

Benefits provided from previous updates includes:

  1. Improve auto focus performance in specific conditions.

How to check the System Software version 

  1. Select Menu > Setup > General Settings > Version.
  2. The System Software version is displayed. If the Version menu in General Settings of your camcorder is version 1.02, upgrade is not required.

Details

Important Notes:

  • Please close all other application software before updating the system software.
  • Prevent your computer from sleep mode beforehand.
  • When performing the system software update, please use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FV70 or the AC adaptor.
  • Do not remove the battery pack or AC adaptor during the update; otherwise, the camera may become inoperable due to the sudden power shutdown.
  • Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand.
  1. Download the update file
    Click on the file Update_FDR-AX53V102.dmg to begin download. Please save the downloaded file onto the Desktop of your computer (recommended).

  2. Start Software Updater
    1. Do not connect the camera yet at this point. Double-click Update_FDR-AX53V102.dmg to start up Software Updater.
    2. Double-click the Update_FDR-AX53V102 icon which appears on the Desktop.
    3. Double-click the Software Updater icon.
    4. To load a kernel extension, the message prompts you to allow the application to make changes. Type the password for the administrative account.
    5. Software Updater starts up.
  3. Check the USB connection mode
    1. Turn on the camera.
    2. According to the Software Updater instructions, select Menu > Setup > Connection > USB Connect Setting on the camera, then check if Mass Storage is selected.

      If a mode other than Mass Storage is selected, selectMass Storage.
  4. Connect the camera to the computer
    Remove the memory card from the camera beforehand, then connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable.
    USB Mode appears on the LCD monitor of the camera.

  5. Check if update is required
    1. After confirming the screens above, click Next. The current version and the version after the upgrade appear on the below screen.

      Upgrade is required
    2. After confirming Current version is Ver.1.01, click Next.

      Note: If Current version is Ver. 1.02, the upgrade is not required. According to the message, stop the USB connection and click Finish. Turn off the camera, remove the batterypack or the AC adaptor, re-insert the battery pack or connect the AC adaptor and then turn on the camera.

  6. The camera automatically reset
    The screen below appears.

  7. Start the update
    After automatically resetting, the below screen appears and the update starts. The progress bar appears while updating (approximately 20 minutes).


    Note: Never turn off the camera nor disconnect the USB cable while upgrading.

  8. Complete the update
    When the update is completed, the camera will automatically restart. Make sure the camera is turned on and wait until the LCD screen appears again. Click Finish when the LCD screen appears and disconnect the USB cable.

  9. Check the System Software version
    Follow the instruction to confirm the System Software version is Ver. 1.02.

    1. Select Menu > Setup > General Settings > Version.
    2. The System Software version is displayed.
