Make sure your device’s software is updated to the latest version, and then register your fingerprint.
To check if your phone has been updated to the latest software:
Go to [Settings] → [System] → [Software update] → [SYSTEM].
If your phone is updated to the latest software, the following message is displayed, "Your device already has the latest available system updates"
Before you start
- Do not hit the fingerprint sensor or apply strong impacts to it. Also, do not scratch the surface or poke it with a sharp object. Doing so may cause a malfunction or damage.
- Do not attach stickers to the fingerprint sensor or daub it with ink, etc.
- If the fingerprint sensor gets dirty, fingerprint registration and recognition may become impossible due to deteriorated authentication performance. Occasionally clean the surface of the fingerprint sensor with a soft, dry cloth. (Please do not wipe with anything containing water, alcohol, disinfectant, etc.)
- Clean the fingerprint sensor gently with a clean and dry cloth.
- Tap Settings → Security → Fingerprint Manager
- Enter your PIN or password.
- Delete all registered fingerprints if you had registered your fingerprints previously.
- Tap Add fingerprint and register your fingerprint.
Please try to add the same finger again if it is not improved. To add an additional fingerprint follow the steps below.
Note: You can register at most 5 fingerprints.
- Tap Add fingerprint, register the same finger to Finger 2, 3, 4 or 5.
- Please shift your finger slightly to the first registered position.
You can try this instead of step 2 or additionally
- Rotate your finger 90 degrees and register it.

But if you can't do a regular restart, try a force restart. - Force restart your phone.
(Press and hold the power button + volume up button for 10 seconds) - Fingerprint authentication works based on fingerprint feature-point information. Therefore, fingerprint authentication may not be possible when the fingerprint does not have sufficient feature points.
- Authentication performance (authenticating a fingerprint when the fingerprint sensor is touched correctly) depends on the condition of the fingerprint. If your fingerprint is in any of the following conditions, registration and recognition of the fingerprint may be impossible due to deteriorated authentication performance. To improve the performance, try wiping or washing your hands clean, authenticating with a different finger, etc.
- Wrinkled or wet after taking a bath, etc.
- Covered with a large amount of sweat or grease such as hand cream
- Dirty with mud or oil
- Rough or injured (cut, inflamed, etc.)
- Extremely dry
- Changed in pattern due to weight loss or gain
- Abraded and faded
- Extremely different at the time of registration and authentication
If the issue persist, your phone may need servicing.
