When you don’t have access to a Wi-Fi network, or when you only have access to a public, unsecured Wi-Fi network, you can easily convert your smartphone into a personal hotspot and share its mobile data connection with other devices (e.g. smartphone, laptop, cellular tablet). In this article, you’ll learn how to share your personal hotspot over Wi-Fi, USB cable and Bluetooth.
A hotspot is a physical location where you can get Internet access, usually using wireless (Wi-Fi) technology. All you need is a wireless local-area network (WLAN) with a router connected to an Internet service provider.
Hotspots are either public or private. You’ve most likely already connected your smartphone to a public Wi-Fi hotspot in places like airports, coffee shops or hotels. Setting up a private hotspot through mobile tethering comes in handy when no public Wi-Fi is available.
Tethering, also known as phone-as-modem (PAM), is a term used to describe sharing your mobile device's cellular data connection with other devices by turning your mobile device into a modem/router. The hotspot feature of your Xperia smartphone allows it to transform its cellular 3G or 4G connection into Internet access that other devices can use.
Before you start
- Not all network providers allow tethering to other devices. Carrier restrictions and additional costs might apply. If you can’t access all the options explained in this article, contact your network provider to verify that you can use tethering with your plan.
- Make sure the following settings are selected on your Xperia smartphone:
- Mobile Data is enabled.
- Wi-Fi, Data Saver and Airplane mode are turned off.
Set up your personal hotspot
Open the expandable sections below to learn how to share your personal hotspot over Wi-Fi (Portable hotspot), USB cable and Bluetooth.
Wi-Fi (Portable hotspot)
Follow the steps below to set up your device as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot:
- In Settings, tap Network & Internet → Hotspot & tethering → Portable hotspot, as shown in the screenshots below.
- To set up the network name and password for your portable hotspot, tap on Configure hotspot.
- You can change your network name by tapping the field below: 'Network name (SSID)', to recognise it easily, (e.g. 'My Xperia hotspot').
- Press the drop-down list below: 'Security', and make sure WPA2 PSK is selected to secure your Wi-Fi connection.
- Check the box next to 'Show password'. (It's recommended to choose a strong password to protect your devices from cyberattacks).
- Tap Save, as shown in the screenshot below.
- To enable the Portable hotspot function, tap the switch next to ‘On’ in the Portable hotspot settings.
- To make your network name discoverable, tap the switch next to ‘Make network name discoverable’ in the Portable hotspot settings, as shown in the screenshot below.
Tip: Depending on your smartphone’s Android version, you can use Quick Settings to access the Portable hotspot settings more quickly. You can skip to the section: How to use Quick Settings to access Portable hotspot settings in Final tethering tips & tricks, for more information.
How to connect another device to your Wi-Fi hotspot
- Turn on the Wi-Fi on the other device.
- Find the list of available Wi-Fi networks and select your own Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Enter the password for your Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Once the connection is established, you can access the Internet from the other device.
Example: How to connect a Windows 10 laptop to your Wi-Fi hotspot
- Turn on the Wi-Fi on your laptop.
- Open the list of available Wi-Fi networks on your laptop, then click on the network name of your own Wi-Fi hotspot (e.g. 'My Xperia hotspot'), as shown in the screenshot below.
- If asked, enter the password for your personal Wi-Fi hotspot, as shown in the screenshot below.
USB tethering
Follow the steps below to share your Xperia smartphone’s Internet connection via USB.
NOTE: In this example we’ll be connecting an Xperia smartphone with a laptop running Windows 10.
- Connect your Xperia smartphone to your laptop through a compatible USB cable.
- In your smartphone’s Settings, go to: Network & Internet → Hotspot & tethering.
- Enable ‘USB tethering’ by tapping the switch, as shown in the screenshot below.
What if the ‘USB tethering’ option is greyed out?
The ‘USB tethering’ option may be greyed out the first time you connect your smartphone to your laptop. Try the solutions below:
- Connect your USB cable, then wait to see if the ‘USB tethering’ option becomes available in your smartphone. You might have to wait a few seconds until your laptop has downloaded the drivers it needs to connect to your smartphone.
- Make sure your USB cable is compatible and working.
- Make sure that ‘Data Saver’ is turned off.
- If none of the above works, disconnect your laptop and your smartphone. Next, restart your Xperia, reconnect it to your laptop via USB, then wait for the drivers to install on your laptop. Try to toggle the ‘USB tethering’ switch again.
- If restarting your phone didn’t help, contact your network provider to verify that you can use USB tethering with your plan. Carrier restrictions may apply.
Bluetooth tethering
Follow the steps below to share your smartphone’s connection via Bluetooth:
- Make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on both devices. Follow the steps below:
- Go to: Settings → Device connection → Connection preferences → Bluetooth → Toggle the switch to 'On'.
- NOTE: The path to access Bluetooth settings may vary depending on your smartphone model.
- In Settings, tap Network & Internet → Hotspot & tethering → Toggle the switch next to 'Bluetooth tethering', as shown in the screenshot below.
- Pair your devices if they haven't been paired before. You can refer to: What is Bluetooth pairing? for more information.
- On the receiving device, open Bluetooth settings and connect to the device which has ‘Bluetooth tethering’ enabled.
- Sharing your mobile data connection may increase your data cost. Make sure to read your data plan before using tethering.
- USB tethering consumes less battery than Wi-Fi (Portable hotspot) or Bluetooth tethering.
- Consider using a power bank when tethering via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
- Bluetooth tethering’s maximum speed is lower than that of USB tethering or Wi-Fi Portable hotspot.
- The speed of tethering depends on how fast and stable your cellular signal is (e.g. concrete and metal walls can affect cell phone signal).
- Distance limitations apply when sharing your mobile connection via Wi-Fi (similar to a Wi-Fi router) or Bluetooth.
How many devices can connect to my personal hotspot at once?
The number of devices that can connect to your personal hotspot at one time depends on your network provider and smartphone model. For example, Xperia 10, can share its mobile data connection with a single computer using a USB cable or with up to four different devices through Bluetooth.
