Edward Tian is a freelance photographer and Automotive Consultant based in Singapore. His photography expertise covers Landscape/Cityscape/Travel and People.

Edward's style of approach is always to find a bold and unique perspective for his viewers. His job as a Regional Consultant has brought him to many parts of Asia where he documents the scenery and culture.

He also conducts photography workshops during his free time and is both a Getty and Stocksy Contributor.

Some of Edward's greatest achievements in his photographic journey include winning the First Prize for the 2013 Marina Bay Countdown Photo Competition and 2014 National Geographic CapitaLand Photo Competition.

What motivates the photographer in you?

I've always enjoyed taking photos as I believe in immortalising the moment that will never repeat itself, but I did not take it seriously until my grandfather handed over his bag of film SLR cameras four years ago to me. The birth of my daughter also sparked off the photographer in me and I took it seriously thereafter, and both these events were about the same time. I enjoy photographing the various stages of her growth, as well as the scenery around me.

How important is photography in your work and personal life?

Photography has become a big part of my life both for work and leisure. I travel for work a lot and during my free time, I would explore the cities to capture its beauty and culture. Photography takes the stress out of work and life and since I started, it has grown into a dedicated passion.

What are your expectations of your photography equipment?

I value my equipment and place high expectations on them. They must cater to my needs, deliver the results I want and meet my standards.

Who are the biggest influences in your photography journey?

My biggest influence would be my good friend and mentor, Elia Locardi. I admire his school of thoughts and approach in photography. It is his style which I built mine around.

What is the greatest challenge you faced in your photography and how did the a7 series help alleviate this?

My biggest challenge is portability and adaptability. As mentioned I travel a lot for work and my equipment must be portable with good performance. When Sony launched the a7 series, I immediately switched over and bought the a7R as it was launched first and fits my needs like a glove.

Why did you choose the a7 series to be part of your work and personal photography journey?

The size of the a7 makes it less intimidating for my subjects such as children, and it’s very portable for my travels.

What, to you, are two or three key features / advantages of the a7 series?

I would say it’s the a7’s Focus Peaking ability, Dynamic Range performance and incredibly nimble weight. The Focus Peaking feature gives me the ability to accurately focus on my subjects unlike normal DSLR’s where you have to rely on your eyesight. The dynamic range of the a7R is more than 14 stops which makes it one of the best in the market. Also, the ability to adapt third party lenses widens my options.

How do you rate Sony in the field of digital imaging?

I would rate Sony TOP of the table because no full-frame camera can give me the sensor performance, lens adaptability and portability like the Sony a series can.

What is your favourite lens?

My favourite lens on my a7R has to be my 17mm f4.0 while the favourite on my a7S has to be the incredible 40mm f1.4.

What’s in your camera bag?

In an ideal situation or as a dream combo, I would pack my a7R + FE16-35mm F4 and a7S + FE28 F2. Since I shoot landscapes, the a7R + FE16-35mm F4 are a perfect combo while the a7S + FE28 F2 are great for street and lowlight photography.
