Why users cannot shut down PC in Windows Vista when "Windows Is Updating the Configuration" dialogue box appears?

    • Users cannot shut down the VAIO computer if the following message appears.
    • Click the power icon in Start. Do not shut down the computer or let it enter Hibernation state if the following message appears.

      Message:
      Please do not turn off or unplug your computer.
      Loading Update xx of xx . . .

      ※ According to different cases, there will be different numbers of updates and 1 of 1, 1 of 2 may display on the interface.


    If the computer still cannot be shut down, please confirm whether the system is reading the data on hard disk. Users can refer to the following solutions.

    ■ System is reading the data on hard disk.
    ■ System is not reading the data on hard disk.





    ■ System is reading the data on hard disk.(The hard disk indicator keeps blinking.)

    Please wait a while. The VAIO computer will turn off automatically.
    Note:  If the power is forcefully cut off in this situation, symptoms such as Windows cannot start may occur.






    ■ System is not reading the data on hard disk. (The hard disk indicator does not blink for a long time.)

    After the VAIO computer is restarted, updates will be reinstalled.
    Please try the following steps.

    ※ Different usage conditions of the computer have different interfaces and names of updates displayed.
    Take the following interface as an example.
    1. Hold the power button (power switch) for more than four seconds to shut down the computer by force.

      Note
      Even if users force to shut down the computer when the system is not reading the data on hard disk, symptoms such as Windows cannot start may occur.

    2. Turn on the computer again.

    3. Connect it to the Internet.

    4. Click Start -> All Programs -> Windows Update.

    5. Click View update history.


    6. When View update history is displayed on the screen, please confirm whether the Failed item is displayed in Status bar. Close View update history.
      ※ If the Failed item appears in Status bar, record the program number that starts with KB in Name.


    7. Click Control Panel, and then click Programs and Features.

    8. Click View the installed update in Programs and Features.

    9. Confirm from the list whether there are Failed programs in step 6.
      If there are no such programs, proceed to step 12.

    10. If the Failed programs appear in step 6, select them and click Uninstall.


    11. If User Accounts Control is displayed, click Continue.

    12. Click × (close) in Uninstall updating programs.

       

    13. Click Start -> All Programs -> Windows Update again.

    14. Click View update history.
      ※ Different operating systems have different buttons displayed.


    15. If User Accounts Control is displayed, click Continue.

    16. Click Install updates.

    18. Click × to close Windows Update when The updates were successfully installed appears.
